The Department of Languages at Mar Athanasios College For Advanced Studies Tiruvalla plays a pivotal role in shaping students’ linguistic competence, critical thinking, and cultural sensitivity. The Department offers English, Malayalam, and Hindi across undergraduate programmes, catering to the diverse academic and communicative needs of learners.Through an interdisciplinary and learner-centric approach, the Department seeks to inculcate critical awareness of the self and society, moulding students into responsible, articulate, and socially sensitive citizens.
In alignment with the FYUGP and NEP framework, the Department offers Ability Enhancement Courses (AECs) in the first and second semesters to strengthen foundational language and communication skills. Multidisciplinary Courses (MDCs) are offered in the third semester, enabling students to engage with language from diverse academic perspectives, while Value Added Courses (VACs) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs) in the fourth semester focus on enhancing employability, creativity, and practical language use.
The English faculty further offers Minor Courses in English across the first four semesters, allowing students from various disciplines to develop advanced competencies in language, literature, and communication.In addition, the Department conducts Add-on and Enrichment Programmes for various postgraduate departments, designed to complement their respective fields of study and professional requirements.
The Department also administers the Literary Club with efficiency and academic rigor. The Club aims to cultivate students’ interest in literature, history, and emotional awareness, while providing a platform for intellectual engagement and creative expression. Through the systematic organization of literary activities, commemorative events, and academic celebrations related to various programmes, the Literary Club significantly contributes to the holistic and cultural development of the student community.
